Frequently Asked Questions

This document answers the most common questions to help pilgrims prepare both spiritually and logistically for a moment of grace and profound spirituality: the veneration of the mortal remains of Saint Francis. May this journey be an opportunity for everyone to personally encounter Saint Francis in their hearts and rediscover the values of peace, fraternity, and goodness lived by the Poor Man of Assisi.

The extraordinary exposition will be held from February 22 to March 22, 2026. This is a special time to remember the life of Francis, be challenged by his example, and embrace his message, which still speaks to the hearts of men and women today.

Yes, to preserve the atmosphere of reflection required for this unique event, specific guidelines have been established:

  • The lower church of the Basilica will be entirely dedicated to the veneration of the Saint's remains.
  • The upper church will be reserved for Eucharistic celebrations.
  • During the entire period of the exposition (February 22 – March 22, 2026), guided tours of an artistic or catechetical nature will be suspended in both churches of the Basilica.

Both paths offer a moment of preparation and accompaniment for this spiritual encounter:

  • Option A (guided by a friar): This path includes a brief spiritual accompaniment by a friar, who will provide essential reflections to help pilgrims fully experience the veneration. It is not a guided tour but rather an aid to enter the mystery of the encounter. The entire path is estimated to take about 30 minutes from the scheduled reservation time.
  • Option B (self-guided and silent): This path is designed to be experienced on one’s own, guided by silence and multilingual materials provided along the way. It is an invitation to an intimate and personal dialogue with the testimony of Francis. No one, including group leaders or guides, is allowed to provide verbal explanations or use headsets. The entire path is estimated to take about 1 hour and 30 minutes from the scheduled reservation time.

Holy Masses in the Upper Church will be celebrated at the following times:

  • Saturdays and Sundays: 7:30 AM, 9:00 AM, 11:00 AM, 12:30 PM, 2:00 PM, 3:30 PM, 5:00 PM, 6:30 PM.
  • Weekdays: 7:30 AM, 9:00 AM, 11:00 AM, 2:00 PM, 5:00 PM.

Considering the limited seating capacity of the upper church and to ensure orderly access and safe celebrations, those wishing to participate in the Holy Mass in the upper church must book their spot for free at this link: www.sanfrancescovive.org/en/booking/#messa.

Groups accompanied by a priest wishing to celebrate Mass independently can contact other churches in Assisi. Here are the contact details of some available churches.

Preparation is the heart of the pilgrimage. We invite you to:

  • Arrive early: Be present in the Lower Square about 40-45 minutes before the time indicated on your reservation to allow yourself time to prepare calmly.
  • Embrace silence: The moment of veneration will involve a slow and continuous passage in front of the urn. This uninterrupted flow will allow many faithful to see the mortal remains of Saint Francis and pray. It is essential to cultivate an attitude of reflection and prayer, letting silence open your heart to the encounter.
  • Plan your time: Consider the estimated duration of your veneration path to organize participation in the Holy Mass, as well as your group’s arrival or departure.

This event is an opportunity to celebrate the life of a man who, like a grain of wheat fallen to the ground, has borne fruit for centuries. We hope this pilgrimage will be a source of peace, inspiration, and renewal for you.
