The veneration of the relics of Saint Francis in Assisi
“Unless a grain of wheat falls to the ground and dies, it remains alone; but if it dies, it bears much fruit”
The veneration of the relics of Saint Francis in Assisi, on the occasion of the eighth centenary of his death, represents a historic and spiritual event of great significance. From February 22 to March 22, 2026, the faithful will have the unique opportunity to venerate the relics of the Saint, a universal symbol of peace, fraternity, and love.
The event, approved by Pope Leo XIV, will take place in the Basilica of Saint Francis in Assisi, where the urn containing the relics will be displayed at the foot of the papal altar in the lower church. This moment of contemplation and prayer is rooted in the Gospel message of the “seed that dies to bear fruit,” celebrating life as a gift and a testimony of love.
Participation Details
To ensure a meaningful experience, a system of free and mandatory reservations has been set up on the official centenary website: sanfrancescovive.org. Pilgrims can choose between two modes of veneration:
- Accompanied by a friar, with a brief spiritual meditation.
- Independently, to allow for a personal moment of prayer.
Additionally, from Monday to Saturday, two international Masses will be celebrated (at 11 AM and 5 PM) in the upper church of the Basilica.
A Message of Hope
The exposition is not just a devotional event but an invitation to reflect on the spiritual legacy of Saint Francis, the “alter Christus,” who dedicated his life to Christ and his brothers. This extraordinary moment calls everyone to be builders of peace, guardians of creation, and witnesses of eternal love.
An unmissable opportunity to be inspired by the life and timeless message of the Saint of Assisi.
